For me, the act of painting pens and converters started as a way simply to have fun. I was coming out of a difficult period and I wanted something that had no pressure or expectation or constraints—that was silly and purely exploratory. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to start taking on more work for sale, but, every once in a while I feel the pull of doing something silly and kitsch, for the pure joy of just trying it out. I love cats, I love space, I love purples and blues, and I love sparkle. Playing with abalone for the first time—not so fancy as an inlay, but experimenting with how I might use it in future work.
